Driver safety – how distracted are your drivers?
by Fiona Taylor
Driver safety is paramount in your business, but what is the biggest distraction to your drivers?
According to a new survey commissioned by a road safety charity, driver distraction linked to all forms of mobile phone use remains the biggest issue affecting drivers. Driver safety and drivers perception of safety is compromised by mobiles.
94% of the drivers questioned said that checking social media was a threat to personal safety. 93% were concerned about fellow drivers texting or emailing from behind the wheel.
91% were concerned about drivers talking on mobile phones.
86% said that distraction caused by mobile phones has increased in the last 3 years.
89% felt drink driving was a threat to their safety. This is compared to 88% who felt the same about those who took illegal drugs and then drove.
72% also said that aggressive driving has worsened over the last three years. While 60% reported higher levels of drug driving.
How do you ensure your drivers safety?
It is important that you, as an employer, are making sure that your drivers are safe. Their personal safety as well as the safety of those around them is paramount. Satmo can help you with this – driver behaviour reporting included in the vehicle tracking is just one way.
Harsh braking and harsh accelerating reports can show you any erratic driving behaviour. Maybe a simple driver policy of mobile phones to be switched off or placed in the boot of the vehicle will help your business ensure that your drivers are not using them when they are responsible for your vehicle.
