Do you trust driverless cars?

Google driverless carsDriverless cars are probably the most talked about technology development for decades. Google especially are investing huge amounts of money to try and become the first to use totally unmanned vehicles. But what do we all think about it?

A recent survey asked members of the public what they thought about driverless cars? How they felt about putting their most precious cargo (their family) into an unthinking vehicle.

Hacking a driverless car

Is the possibility of hacking a driverless car something that we should worry about? The survey found that 85% of those questioned had major concerns about the technology. In particular they were afraid of the possibility of the vehicles being interfered with.

The risk of hacking has been raised by experts, one experiment successfully diverted a driverless car with a laser pen. Other studies have recently shown that driversless cars could be tricked with stickers placed on road signs.

What can driverless cars transport?

When asked, 54% of the members of the public surveyed were happy to have goods like food or clothes delivered by driverless cars. However, only 30% would allow their spouse to get in. People questionned were a little less worried about their best friends though, with 43% saying they would trust a driverless car with their bestie!

The most precious groups, according to the survey, are pets and children. Only 9% of those surveyed said that they would allow their child into a driverless car, and 20% would allow their pets to be transported driverlessly.

Other findings from the survey include:

  • 48% of people were concerned that they wouldn’t be able to take back control of the car if there was a technical malfunction
  • 48% of people said that we should be concentrating on making drivers safer

Where now for driverless cars?

There has been a lukewarm response to the notion of driverless cars becoming the norm, and the makers will need to work hard to increase the opinion of the public if they want them to buy into the idea in the future.
