Can your business become driverless?

by Fiona Taylor
Would it be possible to make your business driverless? Could your day to day activities still be completed if you had fully autonomous cars?
An autonomous car is a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and driving itself without actual driver input. They detect their surroundings using techniques such as radar and GPS. Advanced systems interpret sensory information to identify appropriate routes, as well as any obstacles. Driverless cars have inbuilt systems that are capable of analyzing data to be able to distinguish between different cars on the road around it.
An article in Fleetworld tells us that research recently conducted by car dealership Citygate found a number of circumstances where drivers would welcome driverless cars. But the survey highlighted some areas where trust would still be a concern.
The survey of 1000 drivers found that usage of driverless cars for long distance travel was most popular. 34% said they would welcome a break from driving. Then 29% admitted they would be most interested in using the designated driver feature while under the influence.
27% said they would be happy to hand over the morning commute, and 24% said they would be most likely to rely on a driverless car after dark. Yet only 15% said they would feel comfortable using a driverless car for the school run, and 6% revealed that they wouldn’t use one under any circumstances.
Driverless for business?
How would it work in your business though? Could you send a driverless car to collect someone from the station for a meeting? Would you trust sending important documents or packages in a fully autonomous car to be collected at the other end?
Could you run your business that way? Would you have the same level of trust in the autonomous cars that you have in your actual drivers? A car with no driver can’t deal with a query from your customer on site. It can’t deviate from its planned route because of any issue that may have arisen. Is it worth putting a driverless car forward as the face of your business?
Use your real drivers, build your brand based on the service that they give. Satmo can show you exactly where the vehicles are, what speeds they are travelling and the routes that they have taken. You can see exactly what time they arrived on site and what time they left.
