Are your drivers objecting to vehicle tracking?

by Fiona Taylor

There is already a wide range of legislation in place, and more to come, to ensure that employees are looked after properly. Duty of care, corporate manslaughter, the Working Time Directive to name a few. Businesses are looking at vehicle tracking and the reporting that it can provide to ensure that they fulfil their legal obligations and manage their drivers effectively.
This is all OK being discussed around the boardroom table, or in the back office, but how to your overcome those objections put forward from your team about it all being a bit big brother, and you are invading their human rights?
Nobody likes the feeling of being spied on but there are ways that you can install the system without upsetting your staff.
Some staff can feel threatened by change, especially if it involves technology. By communicating with the team you will keep everyone fully informed about what the change will be and exactly how it will impact them. Include them in the discussions, and explain exactly what you will be using the system for.
One add-on to all vehicle tracking systems is the private and business mileage option, this means that you can set up the system so it will show you details of the business miles, but any mileage done in the employees own time will be marked as private. You can do this 2 ways;
- Software – you can set the software to show shift patterns, so anything outside of the normal working hours will show as private trips.
Private trips are automatically logged if they are completed outside of set working hours
- Privacy buttons – you can either have a button in the vehicle that is pressed by the driver to confirm that the trip they are doing now is private, or they can have a fob attached to their keys that works by sending a remote signal to the unit, but again marking the trip as private when activated.
The reports are set up to show you which trips are private and which are business
There are ways that the system can be configured so that your drivers feel more confident that their private time is their own, and their whereabouts will not be watched outside of office hours. If you have any questions about this or any other part of the vehicle tracking please feel free to give the team at Satmo a call on 01274 587748 and they will be more than happy to help.
