Vehicle tracking terminology explained

Vehicle tracking terminology is sometimes confusing
In our first in a series of blog posts we are going to explain some vehicle tracking terminology used in the vehicle tracking, telematics and fleet management industry.
Today we will start with terms used around your vehicles.
VEHICLE TRACKING TERMINOLOGY
CANbus – Controller Area Network, this is a vehicle bus (specialised internal communications network that interconnects components inside a vehicle) standard designed to allow micro controllers and devices to communicate with each other in applications without a host computer. it was designed originally for multiplex electrical wiring within automobiles.
Excess Idling – unnecessary engine use where drivers leave a vehicle running when not in operation, wasting fuel and creating excessive engine wear.
HGV – Heavy Goods Vehicle.
KPL – Kilometers per litre, a measure of fuel consumption
LGV – Light Goods Vehicle.
MPG – Miles per Gallon, this is a measurement of fuel usage.
OBD – On board diagnostic, this is a term referring to a vehicles self-diagnostic and reporting capability. The OBD system gives the vehicle owner, or technician, access to the status of the various vehicle subsystems.
Odometer – an instrument that measures the distance travelled by a vehicle.
RPM – Revolutions per Minute, is a measure of the frequency of rotations around a fixed axis in one minute. In a vehicle it represents the number of times the shaft of a motor rotates in one minute.
Tachograph / Digital Tachograph – a device that records and produces a graphical report (tachogram) of its readings, used for recording the speed and distance covered by heavy goods vehicles to ensure that drivers and employers follow the rules on drivers hours, often shortened to tacho.
Tail Lift – A mechanical lift fitted to the back of a van or lorry used for loading or unloading of goods and items.
