Are your vehicles ready for winter?

vehicle checks

Make sure you check your vehicles are winter ready with these vehicle checks.

The cold nights are drawing in, and autumn is quickly turning to winter.  This is lovely when we are sat at home in front of the fire with our families and a mug of hot chocolate. It is not so good when we are trying to run a business with a fleet of vehicles. Have you thought about the vehicle checks that you need to do?

We need to start asking ourselves – are we ready for winter?  Here are a few vehicle checks that you can do. They will help make sure that your vehicles are safe during the coming months;

Winter Tyres

Make sure that you check the conditions of your tyres before the winter months start.  Rain, snow, sleet and icy roads can all have a detrimental effect on tyres and increase the chances of an accident.  You will want to avoid skidding so make sure you check that your tyres meet the legal requirements.  Special winter tyres can also be purchased for those who are particularly concerned. They are useful for those travelling frequently on county lanes that are not always gritted.

Tyre Pressure

The big change in temperature during the winter months can cause a substantial loss in tyre pressure.  However, avoid increasing your tyre pressure too much as this will also cause your vehicle to lose grip and can equally cause an accident.  It is your responsibility to make sure drivers check their tyre pressure several times a month during the winter.

Lights and Wipers

You need to make sure that each vehicle is fitted with wipers that will be able to get through the snow fall and the build-up of ice.  You will also need to frequently check that all fleet vehicle lights are working correctly.

In the winter, water vapour collects at the bottom of fuel tanks which can be drawn up into the fuel lines and freeze.  This will prevent your engine from working.  There are a number of ways of avoiding this. Try to avoid your fuel tank being less than ½ full and use fuel-line anti-freeze.

The battery of your car is something that you don’t always think about.  If your battery is more than five years old then it may struggle in the cold months.  Get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid any inconvenience on a busy day.

Does your business run heavy plant machinery or equipment that is used to clear roads or reduce ice and snow, for example a snow plough or gritter?  Then it is vital that you have some kind of system in place that can manage these vehicles efficiently.

You need to be able to keep accurate records of;

  • where your vehicles have been
  • and what roads they have worked on.

If an accident occurs you will need to be able to prove that your team were out and they cleared the road.

The Satmo vehicle tracking system allows you to keep records of exactly which roads the vehicles have been used on, and when.  The GPS data is returned every 30 seconds as a minimum so you can be confident that you have all the data on where the vehicles have been and when.
