5 ‘great’ alternatives to GPS tracking
by Fiona Taylor
GPS tracking may be able to offer businesses the ability to see exactly where their vehicles are 24 hours a day as well as a wide range of other tools to help minimise costs and increase productivity but some businesses may feel that it just ‘isn’t for them’. If you do fall into this category of businesses then please see below some ‘great’ alternatives you can consider!
Sitting alongside your driver and writing down details of every trip you make
Not only will you be able to see first hand exactly where your vehicle is all day, but it’s also a great way to get to know your drivers. There is one massive downfall with this if you have more than one vehicle though as you’re only going to be able to send one out at a time!
Ringing them every 30 seconds
This is another one that’s great for getting to know your drivers and it in no way will become very irritating for everyone involved. The chats will most likely go like the below;
“Hi Dave, where are you now?”
“Just at the lights at the bottom of the street.”
“Hi Dave, how about now?”
“Still waiting for these lights to change”
….and so on.
You’re definitely going to have to take out an unlimited minutes package with your mobile phone provider but at least you’ll know where your vehicles are… if the driver tells the truth every time that is!
Have drivers take a ball of yarn with them to leave a trail
Who needs vehicle tracking when you have yarn?! All you need to do is give each driver a different colour and when you need to track them down you just follow their line!
NOTE: It is not advised to use this tactic on roads with other vehicles as it may be considered a hazard.
Hire a private detective
Why bother to keep an eye on your drivers yourself when you can just pay someone else to do it? Go grab yourself a Yellow Pages and find yourself a few detectives hired to beat the streets and track your fleet. Downside is you may find out more than you wanted to about your employees and end up paying through the nose for the privilege.
Track their mobile phones
Surprisingly this is becoming a more and more common way of tracking drivers activity. Sure it relies heavily on them having their phones on them at all times AND it has to be charged and turned on AND they need to have reception but occasionally everything might come together and then you’ll have a general idea of where they are at that time.
If you think that maybe these aren’t for you and you would like to try the conventional fitted GPS tracking then give our sales team a call on 01274 587748, and they will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have and will sort out the vehicle tracking for you.
