Using telematics to motivate your drivers
by Fiona Taylor
As a business owner and likely the manager of a fleet, how do you motivate your drivers to consistently deliver excellent customer service while performing at their best? Have you ever asked yourself how you can incentivise your drivers to improve performance? If you can engage with your drivers in a positive manner, you’re on the right track to boosting the performance of your drivers and ultimately your business. Check out a few ways to help make that happen.
* Communication
Effective communication between office staff and drivers can pay off in massive ways. A workforce that is communicating effectively will lead to higher efficiency in the company as a whole. Ensure that you are doing everything you can to guarantee that your employees are receiving all the information they need to achieve success.
* Reward
Nothing inspires a workforce like a competition does, especially when there’s a reward for the winner! Creating competitions between drivers based on critical things such as fuel efficiency, speeding and harsh driving events (either slamming on the brakes or the gas!) can bring healthy rivalry to the workforce. With everyone competing to win overall performance levels will rise resulting in higher productivity and customer service. Also, with less speeding and harsh driving events on top of higher fuel efficiency you are guaranteed to see savings!
* Technology
Using technology available now you can give drivers day to day feedback on how they are doing (even in real-time) this can give them a real sense of accomplishment when the feedback is positive. Drivers can even review their own driving so that they can identify areas they may not have known they needed to improve in otherwise.
* Education
Getting your drivers onto courses which are designed specifically with business fleets in mind will be beneficial to both your company and your drivers. As well as equipping your drivers with better knowledge and skills which are beneficial to you, drivers will feel more valued and become more invested in the company. On top of this, as they become better drivers you will see benefits such as lower insurance premiums, less claims and lower fuel/vehicle maintenance costs.
* Recognition
Drivers will feel much more valued if they know that they are being recognised for their performance. The means in which this recognition is given can vary, it could be in a team meeting, their annual review or even by other internal methods such as bulletin boards or scheduled ‘weekly update’ emails, the outcome will still be the same – drivers which feel appreciated!
