Congestion – how does it affect your business?

Time wasted in traffic congestion could cost your business hundreds if not thousands of pounds.
Traffic information firm INRIX used some road analytics software, and surveyed 20,375 traffic hotspots in 21 cities in the UK. A traffic hotspot is a road where drivers have to reduce their speed by a certain amount for more than 2 minutes. Sitting in traffic congestion is wasting your business hours every week.
- London has more traffic hotspots than any other city with 12,776.
- Outside of the capital, the cities with the most traffic hotspots were;
- Birmingham (872),
- Manchester (768),
- Leeds (712),
- Bristol (619) and
- Bradford (596).
- The worst traffic hotspot was on the M25 between junctions 15 (M4) and 16 (M40).
Could congestion be improved by the introduction of the new smart motorways?
Confused.com did some research on the motorway closures that have caused tailbacks or forced drivers to divert off motorways. The report found that UK drivers faced an average of 382 planned motorway closures a month – up 14% on 2014. As a result of this 67% have had to find an alternative route due to a diversion.
18% of drivers surveyed had been stuck on a motorway for over 2 hours as a result of motorway maintenance projects. With 5% of these having been stranded in their cars for more than 4 hours.
11% of drivers have missed a meeting or an appointment as a result of sitting in traffic on the motorway. However, 25% of drivers admitted they never check for disruption ahead of travelling on the motorway.
