Its fleet budget time – streamline your costs
by Fiona Taylor
It’s time to budget! Again!
Many companies are busy working on next years budget, and maybe your MD is already looking for areas to cut costs. How can you help with your fleet budget? What savings can you make, and how?
What do you already spend?
Firstly you should review exactly what you are committed to spending every year. Are there contracts that you are tied into or could you renegotiate a reduced cost?
Does your vehicle lease contract include maintenance or do you need to budget for this separately? If you pay for service charges, maintenance and repair costs as they arise then you need to find a way to reduce these as much as possible.
What other payments are covered in your fleet budget?
Do you currently pay for a fleet management solution? Are you using it to its full potential to make sure that you are as efficient as possible?
A decent vehicle tracking solution will allow you to be able to see;
- whether the routes taken by each driver are optimised
- are drivers crossing each other? Could some deliveries be swapped to reduce double trips?
- total mileage driven
- are your business miles actually business related
- can you check what private mileage is being used? Can you charge the drivers for this or put a stop t it completely?
- when maintenance is due for each vehicle
- staying ahead of MOT and service dates will ensure that you don’t miss any
- also can you see any harsh braking or accelerating events that will also put strain on your vehicles
- more fuel is used during these events and it will put strain on your tyres that may need changing more regularly
Make sure that you are using every report that is available to you to streamline your part of the business, reducing your need for an increased fleet budget, and making your MD happier.
