The question should be can you, but should you? Vehicle tracking has a huge number of benefits for companies and individuals across the world. But should you use vehicle tracking for stolen vehicle recovery?
Being a business owner running a fleet of vehicles can be difficult, and each day will throw up new challenges. Aside from the day to day running of the fleet you don;t want the worry of stolen vehicles. But will vehicle tracking help you?
Stolen vehicle recovery
If your vehicle is stolen when is the first time that you know about it? A minute later, an hour later, the next day? Knowing exactly where your vehicle is at every minute of the day and night can be a headache for vehicle owners. Can a vehicle tracking solution help you?
Yes and no.
Vehicle tracking is a brilliant solution for keeping an eye on where your vehicles are.
How will vehicle tracking help?
A well designed vehicle tracking system will allow you to see:
- where your vehicles are
- where they have been
- routes they are taking
- speeds that they are travelling
You can also use a vehicle tracking system to set up a geofence. Here is a link to our blog about geofences and how to use them.
Can vehicle tracking help stop my vehicle being stolen?
In a word no! I don’t believe that any vehicle tracking company can confidently tell you that having a vehicle tracker fitted will stop your vehicle being stolen. Criminals are getting cleverer, and if they want to steal your vehicle then they will.
Usually vehicles that are stolen to order are taken and parked up for a few days in a public place. This allows the thieves to see if anyone comes back to the vehicle, therefore confirming whether or not there is a tracker in the vehicle.
Alternatively a piece of equipment can be bought that allows the signal that is emitted from the tracker to be located. The thieves will take the vehicle, and stop as soon as they can to remove the tracker from the vehicle. The tracking kit is then usually deposited at the side of the road.
Will Thatcham approval help with stolen vehicle recovery?
A lot of emphasis is put on thatcham approval in the industry, but is it all it is cracked up to be? Read our blog specifically about this issue here. Briefly I personally don’t believe that thatcham approval is as good as people say. They may offer a monitored system but they don’t know that you are not driving the car until you tell them. So if you don’t know that the vehicle has been stolen how can they?
Will vehicle tracking help for stolen vehicle recovery?
Maybe is the best answer that I can give you. It won’t stop your vehicle being taken if someone decides that they want to take it, however it can give you an immediate notification if your vehicle is moved.
